Oral surgery is the dental specialty which treats diseases of the maxillofacial and oral tissue. This includes traumatic injury, removal of neoplasms, repair of anomalies and dental surgery.
WISDOM TEETH
Probably the most common operation for oral surgeons is the removal of third molars. In our office we routinely remove these teeth using a combination of general anesthesia and local anesthesia. All procedures are fully monitored and appropriate emergency equipment is always available. Prior to any procedure, we require a consult with the surgeon to discuss the risks and benefits of the surgery and anesthesia.
IMPLANTS
Dental implants have revolutionized the replacement of missing teeth. We always suggest this treatment as an alternative to standard dental prosthetics.
BIOPSY
Occasionally, we ask the oral surgeon to biopsy abnormal tissue. This tissue is always submitted to a pathologist for microscopic diagnosis.
TRAUMA
Occasionally, the oral surgeon treats minor traumatic injuries while more extensive trauma is reserved for the hospital.
ORTHOGNATHIC SURGERY
This type of surgery corrects skeletal anomalies resulting in severe malocclusion. The treatment is always a multi-specialty problem requiring the orthodontist and surgeon to work together.
